There are few things more beautiful than a long, successful marriage. In the world we live in today, that is a rare commodity, which makes it even more beautiful by contrast. This is a perfect reason to discuss why the event known as the renewal of vows is so significant. So today, I want to lay out a few reasons as to why that is the case and what it means to both the couple who partake in it and the people around them.
The Purpose of Vow Renewal
A good place to begin this article may be understanding the basic principle of why couples would renew their vows. The renewal of vows is an event hosted by the couple and their family to commemorate their years of marriage and even create a fresh start for their marriage. The renewal of vows began and continues as a celebration of how far their marriage has come, for all the hardships and struggles they have endured together, and the memories they have created together. The one benefit of these ceremonies is that they can be held anywhere. Whether you wish to rent out a wedding venue or host it in your backyard, the point of the ceremony remains the same.
Standing Out Together
As I touched on in the introductory paragraph, we live in a time where this form of ceremony is becoming rarer by the day. We live in a time where a long-lasting marriage is becoming a unique thing. Yet that only makes the renewal of vows that much more fascinating due to their rarity. It makes them stand out among our peers. Especially the longer the marriage lasts, which is why you set milestones for these events. It can be as short as five years or as long as 50 years, the choice is up to you.
The Symbolism of Repetition
The ceremony itself is a lesson in repetition. There is an old phrase that comes to mind as I write this. “Repetition makes reputation.” Most people see repetition as a bad word. However, at the end of the day, all it means is “the action of repeating something that has already been said or written.” A successful marriage is about working together as a team. Repeating what works, day in and day out. As difficult as that can be sometimes, you carry on and endure hardships together. A marriage is symbolic of this form of repetition. It is the culmination of the years of repetition that you work through together and all of your hardships and dreams. This is why the event itself can resemble a fresh start, like a new field of snow.
Sometimes it's the simple things that are the most beautiful. Commitment to one person for any number of years is truly a thing of beauty. A vow renewal ceremony is absolutely worth celebrating with you and your spouse, once you set the milestone. At the end of the day, I hope that this adds something to your ceremony and you have a great rest of your day.
